Information

This year we're holding 8 kids kup races at various venues in conjunction with the adult TDD races. The age groups are 4-6, 7-9, 10-12. The courses will be different at each venue, but will challenge the kids just enough to make it fun, without making it dangerous. This may mean different courses for the different age groups at some venues, or it may mean 1 lap for the younger vs 4 for the older kids. It's going to depend on what's available to us on a case by case basis.

This weekend at Turkey Mtn, there will be a separate course for the smallest kids and bigger kids. Parents are encouraged to ride or run with their kids, to be there to help out if the kids need help.

There will also be a guide rider who makes sure the kids stay on their course.

We're trying to make it fun for the kids. All the kids that participate will walk away with something to remember their race!

Thanks for the interest,

Well, the season is almost over! It's been a great season with around 50 kids participating in the Kids Kup this year. A number of kids have made all or almost all of the races, and by doing so have secured their spots on the top of the points standings, congratulations to all of you!

Tour de Lizard, at Camp Horizon in Arkansas City, KS will be the 8th and final race of the Team NRC/Kona Kids Kup series. The kids course is fast, twisty and flat, the kids are going to love it. We're ending the season at one of the best venues we could imagine. Along with the awards for the race, we will be holding the year end awards at Tour de Lizard. Check the current points standings and see where you currently sit. If you're in the top 5 you probably have a shot at earning one of the year end top 3 spots if you do well at Tour de Lizard.

I've enjoyed running the kids kup this season. Next season I'll be playing a big part in the running of the Tour De Dirt (the OK MTB Championship Series) but will also still be running the Kids Kup races. For next season I am looking for some sponsors and donations to make the events run as smooth, or even more smooth than they did this year. If any of you have any contacts to a business or person who you think might be interested in sponsoring the Kids Kup for next season, please let me know.

Thanks!

Kids Kup Blog

Hey Kids! Yesterday's race had it's ups and downs, we had a great turnout, but unfortunately we had a couple injuries on the course. As far as I know, none of the injuries turned out to be serious, and I'm very happy about that. I was excited to see so many kids out there, eager to race. Let's keep the numbers growing going into the next race.

The next Kids Kup event will be race #6, The Sooner Stampede, at Lake Thunderbird State Park, Clearbay area, in Norman, OK. I will be out at the park this week looking for challenging and fun courses for you kids! Look for the distances to be about .5 mile for the 4-6 group, 2-3 miles for the 7-9 group and 4-6 for the 10-12 group.

A few issues arose during the race this past weekend that need to be addressed. I will take a few minutes during the pre-race meeting to discuss these issues with all the kids racing. Expect that the pre-race meeting will be at 12:30 on Sunday, October 7, with a planned start at 1pm. As you all know, we have to make sure the course is clear before we can send the kids out on it, so the start times may be pushed back if the adult races get off to a late start. I appologize for this inconvenience, but it's for the safety of the kids. Also, in order to keep it safe, I may be asking for parent volunteers to be course marshalls, and have you posted in the tricky sections of the trail, to avoid injuries. If you'd be interested in helping out, please e-mail me.

Thanks for all the support, let's keep this event growing!

Hey Kids!  Sorry about the postponement of the Tour de Lizard race, but it was in everyone’s best interest.  The trail was very muddy, very slippery and too dangerous for us to hold a race on.  This race will be rescheduled, I will keep all of you informed as to when it will be.

The next race on the schedule is the McMurtry Madness race in Stillwater.  The Kids Kup race will be taking place following the Sport race finish.  I’m going to head up there as soon as I can and look at possible Kids Kup courses.  Look for the course to be fast and flowing!  This is a great venue for a race, and everyone is going to have a great time.  Let’s make this the biggest Kids Kup race so far.  I’ll be bringing some neighbors out to do their first Kids Kup races, I challenge all of you to do the same!

The Tour de Lizard race is this weekend at Camp Horizon in Arkansas City, Kansas.  We have the Kids Kup course ready to go, it’ll be rockin!  I expect this to be a course the kids love.  Not a technical course, it’s very smooth and very fast.  There will be lots of room for passing and having fun out there.  The course lengths will be as follows:  4-6 yr olds will do 1 lap at approx 1 mile, 7-6 yr olds will do 2 laps at approx 2 miles, and the 10-12 yr olds will do 3 laps at approx 3 miles.

The race will be early in the morning, with the little ones going off at 8:30am, after their finish (approx 8:45am) the two older groups will be staggered by 3 minutes.  This will be one your kids will be talking about for a long time to come, don’t miss it!

See ya this weekend!

We’re just over a month away from the start of the fall portion of our Team NRC/Kona Kids Kup Series.  The next race will be at Camp Horizon in Ark City, KS on Sept 9.  It should be a great venue for the Kids Kup, I’ll be working on setting up the course over the next few weeks and will post an update with the course description and distances.  Hopefully we’ll see all the series contenders out at the race, and as always, the more competition we have, the better it is for the sport.  I have a challenge for all of you who race in the series, get someone new involved!  Bring a neighbor, a friend or a classmate out to the races.  These races are challenging, but very rewarding.

I’d like to congratulate the series leaders going into the second half of the series, keep up the hard work and look towards the end of the series!  (see the results page for more details and points)

In the 4-6 year old group the overall standings show Ethan Sikes in 3rd place, T.C. Smith in 2nd place and Justin Orton leading the series.

In the 7-9 year old group the overall standings show Tyler Denton in 3rd place, David Williams in 2nd place and Kaleb Kinsala leading the series.

In the 10-12 year old group the overall standings show Brandon Day in 3rd place, Joseph Williams in 2nd place and Sara Denton leading the series.

I look forward to seeing you all out at the races!

Another great day for a Kids Kup race! The rain stayed away last night and made the course perfect for racing this afternoon. For all the kids who came out and raced today, you guys rock! This was a longer course than we've previously run in the series. The course was a little less challenging, so we made up for it in distance. Different compters clocked a lap between 2.5 and 3.1 miles, so good job out there! I think this distance was perfect, the older kids got to do two laps, which helps them build towards moving up to the adult distances when they turn 13.

I want to appologize to all the racers for the lack of signs on the course. There was some confusion today on the course and unfortunately it did affect some outcomes. I had posted signs at the more confusing intersections yesterday, and I'm not sure if it was the wind last night, or a rider who removed them, but they were not present today during the race. I will personally ensure that this does not happen again, by riding the next course 10 minutes before the start of the race and making sure everything is in place.

Please continue to tell your friends and neighbors about this fun and challenging event and let's try to get the attendance up. I'll continue to try to get good prizes for all the kids who come and participate, and as always, everyone goes home a winner! See ya at the races, the next Team NRC/Kona Kids Kup event will be at Ark City, KS. Keep checking the website for updates and info. Thanks again!

Sunday we had another great Kids Kup event. The series held it's third race at a new venue, Lake Murray in Ardmore. It was a great location with awesome trails for everyone! The kids had a 3/4 mile loop on the singletrack that was enough to challenge them all. Most of the kids contending for the series championship were on hand to keep building points for the end of the season. We also saw some new faces at this weeks race, which is something we love to see!

This weekend there was also a bike giveaway sponsored by The Bicycle Store in OKC. All the kids who raced were in the running for the bike, but at the end of the day, the bike went to Kaleb Kinsala. Congratulations Kaleb! Enjoy the new cruiser in the neighborhood! All the kids also walked away with Clif Bars and a Medal, the top 2 of each class also took home Kona and New Revolution Cycles water bottles and stickers.

This upcoming weekend we'll be holding the fourth race of the series at the Red Dirt Rendezvous (Stanley Draper Mountain Bike Park, OKC) at 12:30pm on Sunday. The course is a fun one! It'll be the longest race to date for the 7-9 and 10-12 yr old groups, doing 2.5 and 5 miles respectively. The younger kids will also get a good singletrack course to race on, short, but a lot of fun!

I look forward to seeing everyone out there for the Kids Kup on Sunday!

Wow, those were some tough kids who braved the cold Sunday morning to make it out to race in the second of eight Team NRC/Kona Kids Kup races. When I got there Sunday morning, the temperature was a frigid 27 degrees, it couldn't have been much warmer at 8am when the racing action started.

As expected, with it being so cold and also being Easter Sunday, turnout was low. But for those that made it out, we made it worth their while. The course was a great one. The kids weren't disappointed by the course, it was tough, but not too tough. Then later on the kids were treated to an Easter Egg Hunt. I've heard the kids are getting a kick out of checking the Kids Kup website and seeing their names in the standings. This week, as an added bonus, the kids can see themselves racing on film. I rode behind the kids and wore the helmet cam. If you haven't had a chance to watch the video yet, take a look.

The next Kids Kup event will be held on Sunday, April 29th at the Ardmore, Lake Murray Classic stop of the Tour de Dirt. I look forward to seeing you all out there, and have expectations of seeing a large turnout!

Hey Kids, is everyone ready for the next Team NRC/Kona Kids Kup event? It will be on Easter Sunday at Keystone State Park at 8am. I will be out there from Noon on Saturday until probably around 5pm, and then I'll be back out at 6:30am on Sunday. Please find the Team NRC/Pedalmasher tent in the Expo area to register. Because the race will be so early on Sunday, please make every attempt to register the day prior. There will be a Kids Kup mandatory race meeting to go over the race course, rules and safety at 7:30am on Sunday.

Following the race, there will be an Easter Egg hunt at 10am in the Expo area. Please gather near the Team NRC/Pedalmasher tent for information on the Easter Egg Hunt! You do not need to participate in the race to participate in the Easter Egg Hunt.

As always, no kids leave without a prize! If you raced at Turkey Mtn and would like to race with the same number plate, just let me know when you register.

See ya out there!

I want to thank all of the families who brought their children out to the course today and allowed them to race in the Kids Kup, without your support the Team NRC/Kona Kids Kup series wouldn't work. We had 20 racers today who competed in the 3 age groups. Let me know what you liked and disliked about the event so I can fix things or try to make it better for everyone.

Word of mouth is what's going to make this event bigger and better, get your friends involved, bring a neighbor out, let's get more kids involved in a great activity. All the kids go home winners, no one leaves empty handed (unless they leave before the awards).

Thanks!
